Berlin’s Alexanderplatz crystallizes the entire drama of German and European history. In honor of the Russian tsar, the Prussian king christened the nameless parade ground Alexander in 1805. As “Alex” it was to reflect the splendor and misery of upheaval, revolution and dictatorship in the centuries that followed.
